Why do doctors recommend thyroidectomy?
Your doctor may recommend thyroid surgery if the thyroid is overactive or if it has enlarged and is starting to cause pressure in the neck. If suspicious nodules have formed on the thyroid or if biopsies suggest thyroid cancer your doctor will usually advise surgery to remove the nodules. This may involve hemithyroidectomy (removal of half of the thyroid) or total thyroidectomy.
